Treatments
At Back to Fitness Physiotherapy we have a very ‘hands-on’ approach to treating spinal, joint and muscle problems. Typically we will use a combination of the following, depending upon your specific injury requirements to get you ‘Back to Fitness’ as soon as possible. From your first session you will be given exercises to perform at home to speed up your recovery and prevent relapses. These exercises will be progressed as your symptoms improve.

Joint Mobilisations and Manipulations
Mobilisations
These are manual techniques performed by your Physiotherapist to treat your joints and soft tissue. They consist of graded, oscillatory movements to the specific joint or region to assist restoration of your normal movement, lubricate joint surfaces, decrease your pain and reduce muscle spasm.
Manipulations
These are a short thrust treatment performed at the end of your available range of movement. This approach is often used to break down scar tissue/adhesions, remove a blockage in the joint and to restore full joint movement. They often result in a characteristic click or crack sound.

Soft Tissue Techniques
These are techniques use by the Physiotherapist on soft tissues such as muscle, ligament and tendon. They can include techniques such as massage, deep transverse friction massage or muscle energy techniques.

Electrotherapy
This can include the use of modalities such as Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), Interferential and most commonly ultrasound. The crystal within the ultrasound treatment head vibrates at a prescribed level and transmits energy in the form of sound waves through the body’s tissues which stimulate the body’s chemical reactions and promote the healing process. This can assist best healing, reduce tissue spasm, reduce swelling and thereby reduce pain.

Taping/Strapping
Taping and strapping techniques are commonly used by physiotherapists in the treatment of sports injuries. Taping is used to give extra support to injured joints and soft tissues. Ankle strapping, knee strapping and elbow strapping techniques are most often applied during sports for the prevention and protection of sports injuries.

Sports Specific Rehabilitation
At Back to Fitness Physiotherapy, we understand the pressure on athletes to return to competition as soon as possible. This can be pressure to rejoin the team or internal pressure to train for a race. We will understand what you need to be able to do in your sport and then design a sports specific rehabilitation programme to prepare you to compete again. This may include gym work or specific sports drills.
